ILL-FATED R 100

AIRSHIP SOLD AS SCRAP. Britain's giant airship R100, which cost £500,000 to build, and which flew to Canada and back, has been sold for scrap to Messrs. Elton Levy Ltd., metal merehants. The airship's disposal was one of the savings recommended by the National Economy Committee a few months ago. "We have bought most of the R100 as she aetually flew," stated the purehasers, "but such things as the gasbags, the engines, the fabric, and the. wireless equipment are not included in the sale. As far as possible we shall emplojy local labour for the breaking up. What will happen to the metal we don't lcnow. Most of it is duralumin, which has a limited application, mainly for aeroplane construction. The only parts we shall not destroy are the aluminium tanks. These should find a good sale intact." At one time the R100 was the largest airship in the world. Built at Howden, Yorks., she did not fly again after the crash of her sisfer ship, RiQl. She had a capacity of 5,000,000 eubic feet, compared with 6,500,000 cubic feet of the United States airship Akron.
