TENNIS FINALS

(Press. Assn.-

brilliant display by young australian player angas wins men'S singles

— By Telegraph-

— Copyriglit).

AUCKLAND, Saturday. The attendance to-day beat the record established on the previous day at tbe New Zealand Tennis championships. In the men's singles championship there was a display of steady tennis, neither Angas nor Barnett being prepared to take risks in the windy conditions. The match was played for the most part from the base line, Angas advancing to the net much more frequently than his opponent, and he met with a good deal of success, cutting off many of Barnett's fine returns. In the ladies' singles, Miss Hartigan gave a really brilliant display of driving and was accorded a big ovation at the conclusion of the match. Mrs Molesworth hastened to the net to embrace and kiss her young rival, who had given a display as brilliant as anything seen from a lady player on the courts for many a long day. The crowd was not slow to appreciate the merits of the winner's performance and she was greeted with another big lot of hand clapping as she and her opponent walked from the court. In the men's doubles, Wilson and Stedman forced the attack throughout the match, Wilson scored most of the points with unplayable smashes, although Stedman at times won applause for his beautiful forehand drives to the corners. A. L. France seemed listless and made many mistakes. D. 'G. France did more than his share of the attack and defence. After their three-set match in the semi-final, Miss Hartigan and Stedman seemed tired in the final against Miss Nicholls and A. L. France, who beat them comfortably in two straight sets. Results: — Men's singles: Final— Angas beat Barnett 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-0. Ladies' singles: Final— Miss Hartigan beat Mrs Molesworth, 6-2, 6-4. Men's doubles. Final— Wilson and Stedman beat France and France 6-2, 8-10, 6-4, 7-5. Combined doubles: Final — Miss Nicholls and A. L. France beat Miss Hartigan and Sfoedman, 6-2, 6-1.
