Roscoe (Fatty) Arbuckle, of comedy fame, is to make a test comedy which should prove, even more than the hundreds of thousands of letters published in overseas magazines, whether or not he has a chance to regain his once great popularity. Arbuckle is at present directing comedies at the Hal Roach studio: It is stated that since it has been decided to give Fatty his longed-for chance at a come-baek, he has said wistfully, now and then, "That joke is just the sort of thing I could do." And the supervisor or the actor or director who happens to hear says cordially, "That's rightj it's yours. Save it for your first picture, Fatty. You're welcome to it." * * *. Marlene Dietrich has signed a new contract with Paramount for twentysix weeks' work in America each year/. The other twenty-six weeks or six months will be spent in the Fatherland. Since Marlene is not on the, quota list "this six months' absence is made necessary by law. Marlene doesn't want to be included in the quota. She demands the six months in Germany, for she considers • Hollywood a place in which to work and make money; home a place to live and spend it. * * * Beryl Mercer, whose remarkable screen portrayals have made her the foremost character actress in Hollywood, in two short years, has an outstanding part as the hypocritieal landlady of "Merely Mary- Ann." Janet Gaynor and Charles /F'afrreil have the co-starring roles. in this Fox romance, which Henry King directed from the play by Israel Zangwill. i
