COMFOItT AND SOLID ENGINE DESIGN COMBpENE IN NEW MODEL. ATTRAGTIVE CO ACHBUILDIN G One of the most attractive designs In coachbuilding recently put on the road is the hew 8 h.p. Morris Minor. The Morris engine work Jlas made a name for itself, and this, together with the m'odern imprWements ineqrporated in the body design of the car, make it an excellent proposition from the standpoint of b'dth economy ah'd cbmfort. New features incorporated in this m'odei are the low downswept frame design, the new "Eddyfree" body, sliding head saloon, safety rear tarik, new radiatdr, wide doors with wihding windows, side-valve engine; long; semi-elliptic springs, and progressive shock absorbers. The power bnit consists of a fourcylinder water-cooled engine of 57 ihm. (2.25in) bore and 83 mm,. (3-.3in) stroke (847 c.c., 51.7 cu. in), built in unit construction With a single-plate dry clutch and a three-speed gearbox The cylinders are cast "en bloc" and equipped with a detachable head On which is mounted the dyna'mo. The slde valves are operated hy a sturdy camshaft and protected by a readily detachable oiltight cover. The pistons are of aluminium and possess three rings, the lower one being of the bil sea! pattern. The working mixture is supplied by an automatic pistontype S.U. carburetter; the petrol is carried in a 5-gallon tank mounted at the rear of the chassis and is gravity fed to the carburetter by automatic petrol lift. The maiii bearihgs are iubricated under high pressure by a gear-type bil pump, and the oil is thoroughly filtered hy a large oil filter before entering the pump. A generous radiator ahd fan ensure adequate cooling. Ignition is by Lucas battery and edil. The starter motor is of the sliding pinion type, engagiilg with the toothed rim of the flywheel. Both foot and hand brakes operate internal-expanding shoes on all four wheels by cables. The brakes are readily adjuSted. Trhnsmission is by tubular propeller shaft with fabric universal joints, and final reduction by spirhl bevels. Chassis lubrieation is hy high-pressnre grease gun. The springs are Of ample length and of the semi-elliptic type fore and aft. They are controlled by progressive shock absorbers. Detachable wire Wheels with self-locking stud nuts are h'tted. The wheelbase is 78in, and the track 42in. The frame is downswept to ensure a low centre of gra-. vity and g'obd stability.
