FENTON ST. LAY-OUT
DISCUSSIGN BY COUNCIL ADJGURNED FOR NEXT MEETING THREE-WAY TRAFFIC SCHEME The hour was late when the Roto- . rua Borough Council at its meeting on Wednesday evening, approached the consideration of the mueh-debat-ed lay-out of Fenton Street and Whaka Road, and after a preliminary discussion had been embarked upon, it was finally decided to adjourn the matter until the next meeting of the council. The discussion arose as a result of a recommendation from the Reserves Conrmittee that scheme No. 3 for the Fenton Street lay-out as prepared by Mr. Tschopp, be approved. Scheme No. 3 is the lay-out incorporating three-way traffic on the boulevard plan. Counclllor Albert Smith opposed the proposal on the grounds that three-way traffic would he dangerous on an arterial road. "I have spent at least a third of my life in driving. and I know what I am talking about. I consider it most dangerous," stated Councillor Ssnith. * He moved that the scheme incorporating three-way traffic be dropped from the report. and the alternative scheme incorpoi'ating two-way traffic substituted. Seconding the motion, Councillor E. T. "Johnson said that he felt that the scheme before the council would necessitate very heavy upkeep. It would necessitate six road edges among other things, and a heavy initial expenditure. Discussion Postponed At this stage Councillor O. II. Coleman moved, as an amendment, that as two members of the Reserves Committee were absent, discussion of the clause should be deferred until next meeting. The Mayor, Mr. T, Jackson, said that, in his opinion, this did not constitute a sufficient reason for adjourning the matter. The two members of the committee were awarfe that the clause would come up, and that it involved a matter of policy; the onus was upon them to be present. However, the report had been cireulated a little late, and the members might not have had time to consider.it fully. Councillor H. Tai Mitchell pointed out that the matter was one of vital urgency to the town and expressed the opinion that it was desirable that a full meeting of the council should consider it. He seconded the amendment, which was carried \ on the voices. -
