At last, to the surprise of the other passengers, she sprang angrily to her feet, and exelaiming "you brute," gave the uumbfounded man a resounding smack across the face. She then wrathfully resum'ed her seat oblivious. of the stir she had causcd among the passengers. At the next station, the man grabbed his bag and made a hurried retreat to another compartment. The remaining passengers gaze.d apprehensively at the woman until shp left the train at a junctiori town. The cause of the excitement was explained when one of the grinning passengers reached beneath the seat, and brought out a bag containing an inquisitive looking fowl.
