. champione beaten BARNETT'S THRILLING DISPLAY i IN MATCH WITH ' STEDMAN AUSTRALIAN LADIES' SUCCESS

— By Telegraph— Copyright) .

! ' AUCKLAND, Thursday. Beautifully ffne' Weather prevailed agafri to-day iof thei fanrth idaY'l |play in the! Ndw Zealands' ' Tdnwis. i Championships. There was a- good atteiidance of the public, whose int$f est inereased ris the: various. sebf- , ibns prbgressed toWafd the- s'emi-firiai and the final stages. '• . , : Bi'g fedtures of the day's play , were the elimination iof the title holders, Stedman ■ - and Mrs, Dyk'es, and the suoeeSs df a,llifour--meftibers ! of the New South- Wale§ .team • in the ladies singles-, the semi-final -and final of -which Will now bri- eontestrid betWeen them. Their alhrotmd play prove'd too mtich- if or the New Zealanders.

' i i Play in the men's singles saw Barnett (Canterbury), Wilson (Wellington) Bartleet; (Auckland)' and- Angas ( Canterbury) remain in- to contest the semi-final. • Barnett and Angas were responsible for the elimation of two strong contenders in Stedman and Fr'arice ; respectively. Four seeded players will remain in the doubles. ; i The final- of the ladies doubles will . be c'ontested BetWeen the Austral'ians, Miss Valkenhurg and Miss Hall, and Mrs. DyRes, (Wellington) arid' Miss Knight, (Auckland) . The latter pair eliminated two other Australians, , Miss Lloyd and Miss Uartigari. ' Barnett's Fine Display Barnett was much ■ the "Steadier pldyer iri hi^ mtatch with- Stedman! : He senf practically eVerything back, n!o m'atter how hard it was-. Barnett put -a good deal of spin -on the ball, and this, combined with variation of length, f orced his opponent into errors. Barnett's anticipation and ability to cover the ground was marvellous. Nothing like it has been seen on the courts for years, not even excepting players from overseas. • Playing with greater steadiness and showing a bigger variety of shots, Angas beat France, Angas interspersed pretty drives dowri the side line with spin shots which had France in trouble. On account of his greater fitness, and better present form Barleet experienced little d'ifficulty in beating Laurenson after he had settled dOwn. Barleet made errors in the first set, Laurensoii being qtrick to ttirn the mistakes to good account, but Bartleet theri began to play his tfsoal game and the reshlt Was theri fieVer in doubt. Australians' Successes In her • match with Miss -Hartigan, Miss Nicholls put up an- unexpectedly poor showing in the first set, with the result that she was' under a sevele. Handicap for the rest of the match. Although she took the second set after close play ,and did well in' the final set, her task was hopelesS. Hard driving greater commattd of strokes and more varied play gave Miss Valke-nhurg a complete win over Mrs. France, who made a good fight in the first set against the more experienced player. In the second set the Wellington player could not cope •yrith Miss Valkenburg'S tireless attack, and was never dangerous. : Mrs. Molesworth was too strong all rotlftd for Miss Knight. Her serviCe was riloi'e p'bwerful and hard drivjng frequently left her opponent standing. This victory cbmpleted the sriccesses of the Australians. ■ ■ * •
