Anniversary Day. To-day is ihe 92nd anniversary of the arrival at Kororareka — now Russell — in the Bay of Islands, of Captain William Hobson, the first Governor of New Zealand. The day will be observed as a close holiday by Government Departments, banks and leg-al offiees and business houses. Special attraptions for holiday markers inclnde a erieket match at the Iligh School grounds between teams selected from the Rotorua, Tauranga and Te Puke sub-association and the Rest of the Bay of Plenty, and an aquatic sports carnival and picnie at Coehrane Park. Primary School Staff Changes In view of the fact that the Rotorua Primary School has risen a grade the Education Department has authorised the appointment of an additional assistant teacher. The position v.-ill be filled by Mr I. S. Cruickshank, formerly of Weraroa. Another change in the teaching staff is the appointment of Miss A. S. Buggy as a relieving teacher pending the appointment of a permanent teacher to take the place of Mrs Collett, who resigned at the end of the school period last year. Oddfellows' Impromptu Debate. The Rotorua branch of the M.U., I.O.O.F. held on impromptu debate at their last fortnightly meeting held in'the Druid's Hall, the subject being "Do we indulge in too much Sport." The case against sport was taken by three sisters of the Order and the case for the "ayes" by three of the brothers. At the conclusion of an interesting debate the ladies won by a fair majority on a show of hands. Unemployed Teachers. As ,a result of the scheme for rationing work among unemployed teachers, the Education Depattment. Wellington, has directed the Rotorua Primary School Committee, that the positiops usually filled by probationary tu.jistants will in future all be regardeu as relieving positions,. and apportioned so that all unemployed ex-students of the Training dollege will receive employment for at least one term during this year. Ih view of this decision the hoard will be unable to give employment for this year to students who left the Training College at the end of last year. Application Refused. An application was recently made by the Rotorua Primary School Com- j mittee that the Education Department J provide the whole of the sum requir- j ed to build the proposed dental clinic J in Rotorua, in view of the fact that j a sum of £200 was subscribed some years ago towards the erection of the manual and technical classroom which is now removed to the High School. The Department replied stating that it was unable to agree to such proposal as the building v/as still used for manual training purposes, for j what used to be the upper standards of the Primary School.
Exhibition of Plans. The Reserves Committee of the Rotorua Borough Council has arranged a complete exhibition of the plans prepared by the landscape aehitect, Mr. F. Tsehopp, for the beautification of the streets and reserves of the borough. Race Day Traffic. The Rotorua Borough Council last evening confirmed a committee recommendation that control of traffic on race days be the same as last year, i.e., that all vehicles travelling to or from the race course should he eonfined to-Fenton Street. It was also decided that Carnot Street, Grey Street and Robertson Street be closed. to through traffic and declared parking areas and that no parking of cars be allowed in Fenton Street between Malfroy Road and Robertson Street during race days. Traveller's Narroiw Escape. Becoming out of control about 32 miles from Taupo on the Napier, Road on Tuesday evening, a service car on the Rotorua-Napier run mounted a bank at the side of the road, rolled over, and landed on its hood. No one was seriously injured, though one of the passengers and the driver suffered slightly from shock. The vehicle was extensively damaged. Wednesday Bowling Results. Matches were continued in the Wednesday section of the Rotorua Bowling Club's competitions, held in the Government Gardens. The slight drizzle during the night before had slowed up the rinks a little, hut they were playing in excellent condition and the weather was perfect. Following are the results: — Singles: Pakes, 18 beat Merriman, 15; Richards, 21 heat French, 15; Webher, 18 beat Brooker, 12. Pairs: Merriman aiid Richards, 31 heat Stallard and Stonehouse, 17; Hamilton and Fowkes, 30 beat Hall and Brooker, 10; Harris and Aitken, 24 heat Morland and Cottrell, 13. • • Farmers' Union Meeting. A meeting of the Rotorua Sub-Pro-vincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union will b eheld in the Tirau Hall on Wednesday, February 3, at 11 a.m.
