BYSTANDERS INDIFFERENT WHEN LADY REQUESTS HELP ■ MONEY TAKEN FROM TILL An impudent theft was perpetrated yesterday afternoon when a man entered the premises of Messrs Adams Bruce in Fenton Street and taking advantage of the temporary absence of ,the young lady assistant, extracted a sum of approximately £2 in small change from the till. The intruder was observed in the act of bending over the counter, however, and when charged with interfering with the till, said that he would "go for the poliee" and made for tfie .door, Recognising that fiis ' intention was to escape, however, the lady assistant courageOusly took hold of the man and aecompanied him into the. street. Here she endeavoured to obtain the assistance of several bystanders but in every case these were quite indifferent to her requests for help and refused to take any interest in -the matter. Eventually, she.sricceeded in pushing the man into another shop where one map consented to .watch him while the assistant phoned the poliee. -ooner had the young lady turned away, however, than she saw the man and his volunteer guard walk out of the shop together and disappear. The man had been seen hanging ronnd Messrs Adams Bruce's premises during the afternoon and had made two small purchases before he made his attempt upon the till. The poliee have the matter in hand and are investigating.
