BEACH AGAIN TOO ROUGH FOR SPEED RECORD ATTEMPT RUN POSSIBLE TO-DAY
-By Telegraph — Copyright).
NINETY MILE BEACH, Monday. Although this morning everything pointed to Mr. "Wizard" Smith making an attempt on the ten mdle record and all preparations were made for a run this afternoon, an examination of the heach showed that last . night's spring tide had caused big washouts in the track north of Hukatere. The indications earlier were that the beach had been well cleared up hy heavy seas at the highest tide of the season, but the wind was in the wrong direction, causing sid)| currents which made the washouts. Mr. Smith was patently disappointed at the state of the beach. He ran the whole length in a touring car while feverish preparqtions were made at the garage to get ready. On his return he stated that he would not take the Enterprise out.' Racing wheels had been fitted to the car and flag men from Kaitaia had all arrived to mark the course. The- timing apparatus was also sent up the beach. It is understood that the van will be parked in the sandhills as, if there is another heavy sea to-night, Mr. Smith hopes to be able to do something to-morrow.
