HAWERA JUBILEE

GIGANTIC HALF-TON CAKE OF BRITISH INGREDIENTS INCLUDING GOLD COflNS. CEREMONY AT BAKING. Half a ton in weight and eontaining only British ingredientS, the giant cake with which to celebrate the Hawera Borough Jubilee in February next was placed in the baker's oven at Hawera last week. The procedure of mixing and baking was given a touch of ceremony when his Worship the Mayor, Mr. E. A. Pacey, and Messrs. L. Carrel (treasurer), B. C. Bennett (representing the Jubilee Finance Committee) and a Hawera Star representative visited the High Street bakery of Mr. M. Campbell and handed over 333 gold and silver coins to he included in the mixture. Two other eoins held by their owners for many years as lucky tokens also were eontributed. The bakery staff, attired in snow-white shirts, trousers and aprons, welcomed the visitors, who were permjtted to view the great piles of ingredients and the separate "slabs" before they entered the oven. The contents of the cake wfere ofispecial interest, the weights being as follow: — Butter, 150 lb; sugar, 1551b; flour, 2501b; fruit, 6001b; eggs, 1250. It is expected that the cake will he completed in its entirety and ready for display and sale to the public a week before the jubilee celebrations commence. A speCial staging ranging tier on tier to a height of over six feet has to be constructed before the almond and white icing is commenced. For the latter decoration it is estimated that 2cwt of icing sugar will be required. The butter and eggs were obtained in South Taranaki, and the sugar and fl6ur from Auckland and Canterbury respe'ctively. All the fruit qsed is Mildura quality and comes from Yictoria, Australia. During the ceremony of handing over the eoins, it was explained that offers had been received from Wellington, Wanganui and el§ewhere to make the cake, hut the committee, havifig approached Mr. Campbell, were pleased to fihd that it could he haked in Hawera. Confidence was expressed in Mr.- Camphell's ability to turn out shch a gigantie confeetion— probably the large'st of its kind attempted in Hawera— and all joined in complimenting hjm on his undertaking and wishing him every success. Mr. Pacey gave the cake 'His blessing" but at the same time remarked. that his knowledge of the art of eakemaking- was very limited. He hoped that the coins would be distributed evenly and suggested ainidst laughter, that perhaps Mr. Campbell would place a tag on the gold ones so that he (Mr. Pacey) would know where to find them when the time came to wield a' knife.
