(From
WHAKATANE, Sunday. A distressing fatality oeciirred at Whakatane near the Whakatane Bridge at 2 o'cloclc on Saturday af-. ternoon when Irene Elsie Wilson the sixteen-year-old daughter of Mr. James Wilson, of Bridge Street, Whakatane, a farmer, was drowned while bathing in the Whakatane River. After luncheon deceased, in company with her two sisters, aged 7 years and il years respectively, went for a swim in the river„at the baek of their father's farm.' Later Mr. Wilson heard shonts and rushing down td the river bank, he saw one girl near the bank and another about four feet from the bank in water about 4ft 6in deep. The deceased was about ten feet further out. The father plunged in and brought the second girl out, but when he got td the deceased she had collapsed. Dr. Appleby was called in immediately and applied restorative treatment for about two hours but without success. The deceased was a good swimmer and it is diffieult to understand how she got into difficulties. It is thought that she went to the assistance of her sister and the ex^ertion was too much for her. The medical opinion is that she was bathing too soon after a meal. An inquest was opened at the Whakatane Police Court this morning before Mr. G. A. Brabant, Coroner, and after, evidence of identifieation had been given by the father, was adjourned sine die.
