STEDMAN BEATEN

BARNETT OF CANTERBURY OUTCLASSES N.Z. CHAMPION INTERESTING POSITION

By Telegraph— Copyrigrht).

AUCKLAND, Thursday. A big tennis carnival, which will continue until tbe end of next week commenced at the Stanley Street Courts to-day, when Auckland and Canterbury representatives met in the semi-final of the Wilding Shield competition. The weather was fine and there was a good attendance of the public. The courts were in fast order after the long spell of dry weather. The sensation of the day was the defeat in two straight sets of A. C. Stedman, the holder of the New Zealand singles championship, by Barnett, the young Canterbury player. There was no doubt about the result, Barnett being the stronger player on the day, while his judgment and tacties were also a good deal ahead of the Aucklander. Angas was expeeted to give Bartleet a inuch closer match than actu-

ally resulted, but Bartleet was right on his game after the opening set, and Angas never looked like winning. Subsequently Glanville atoned for Angas' defeat by beating- Moi'rison, after the last nametl had won the first set to love. Sturt proved much too strong for Patterson, and so honours were then even as far as the single matches were concerned. Angas and Barnett were much too steady for Bartleet and Morrison, and the Canterbury team never really appeared to be in danger of losing. Stedman and Sturt outclassed Glanville and Patterson, and thus a double win went to each province. The position at the end of the first day's play was that each team had won three matches, and so the interest in to-day's play has been well sustained, and a close result is anticipated. Results : — ^ Singles Barnett (Canterbury) beat Stedman (Auckland) 6-3, 6-3; Bartleet (Auckland) beat Angas (Canterbury) 2-6, 6-0, 6-2; Glanville (Canterbury) beat Morrison (Auckland), 0-6, 10-8. 6-4; Sturt (Auckland) heat Patterson (Canterbury) 6-2, 6-0. Doubles Angas and Barnett beat Bartleet and Morrison, 6-4; 6-3; Stedman and Sturt beat Glanville and Patterson, 6-2, 6-2.
