WELLINGTON'S BETTY CAPSIZES WHEN ON THE FINAL LAP AN EXCITING RACE

WELLINGTON Thursday. After an exciting race sailed in a fairly strong northerly, the Canj terbury challenger, Avenger, won the Sanders Cup trophy to-day. Hard luck j befel the Wellington boat, Betty. j when within about a quarter of a I mile of the finish and ab.out five sec- ; onds ahead of the Avenger, she capsized, and as the Avenger was the only other hoat in the running the race was left in her hands. The course Was a windward and leeward one. In the early stages the j Betty and the Avenger kept each other company arrd after the finish of the first lap it was evident that'the race was between these .two boats. The Otago hoat started. but withdrew on account of a defective rudder. The Auckland and Southland boats completed the course, but were well behind the Avengei*. The race became very exciting at the last lap, the Avenger and - the Betty taking the lead alternatively. Rounding the buoy on the run for the finishing round the Betty had a lead of about a minute. Johnston did not set his spinnaker immediately, but was foreed to do so later by Brassell setting his. The Avenger crept up on the Betty But in the excitement of the Avenger's challenge Johnston looked around, and at the same time a squall struck the hoat and lifted her. She rolled to leeward, then to the weather side, and Johnston, being unable to control her as quiekly as he had done on former occasions in the i*ace, capsized to the weather side. The official times wero: — Avenger (Canterbury) 12h 38m 37sec. Val (South'and), 12h 52m 40r,ec. Rangi (Auckland), 13h 2m 29sec.
