CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. A verdict that death was due to drowning in att.empting to save the life of a friend was returned at the adjourned inquest into the death of Thomas Hugh Eric Monro, who lost his life in the surf at Waikuku Beach. Evidence was given that deceased's brother-m-law, Mr. J. D. Simpson, got into diffieulties and that Monro had gone to his assistance after despatching a boy for help. The coroner, Mr. Mosley, said tbat it might be some consolation to re-* latives and friends tliat Mr. Monro kad lost his life in endeavouring to save the life of Simpson. Being only a moderate swimmer, he knew that he was risking his life and did not hesitate to go to his friend's assistance.
