Before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., at Whakatane yesterday morning, William Ernest Hiwins was charged that on Fl-iday, January 15, he assaulted William Snow, Junior, by striking him in the face at a boarding house in "Commerce treet, Whakatane. Accused was also charged with failing to comply with the terms of his probationary license and also with being an idle and disorderly person having insufficient lawful means of support. Constable Cummings prosecuting, stated that the accused had failed to report regularly and had been found several times in billiard saloons, which was contrary to the terms of his licence. Accused, who pleaded guilty to the first and second charges, was convicted and fined £1 on the assault charge, and convicteld and sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment on the charge of breaking his probation. The third charge was dismissed.
