MAJESTIC

TO-DAY AND TO-NIGHT A real cinematic gem is "Daddy Long Legs," Fox romance based on the famous Jean Webster play with Janet Gaynor and Warner Baxter costarred, which opened to an enthusiastic audience last night at the Majestic Theatre. "Daddy Long Legs" is ideal entertainment. A great human story, a genuinely outstanding east headed by two of the most popular players on the screen, and the other attributes of flawless direction and splendid settings serve to make the picture a real event in local screen circles. The choice of Janet Gaynor and Warner Baxter for th^ leading roles is a particularly happy one. "Judy Abbott" in her progress from gingham and pigtails to chiffon and permanents is an absolutely ideal part for the'wistful charm of Janet Gaynor. Baxter likewise is a pe-rfect choice for the suave, cynical but lonely bachelor who is greatly surprised to find himself failing in love with his ward, and his handling of the part is a personal triumph. Una Merkel scores another hit as Miss Gaynor's delightfully e-rratic room-mate and young John Arledge, a new film find, turns in a highly promising portrayal of Baxter's rival. Claude Gillingwater, sen., Kathlyn Williams, Louise Closser Hale, Elizabeth Patterson, Sheila Mannors and Effie Ellsler have the othe-r chief roles, and handle them beautifully. Alfred Santell's direction is smooth and effective throughout.
