first qualifying race won by betty avenger's strong challenge

WELLINGTON, Monday. Sailed in a strong southerly breeze, the first qualifying race in the twelfth Sanders Cup contest this afternoon, resylted in a win for the Evans Bay (Wellington) hoat, Betty. Betty and Avenger, the Canterbury representative, put up a great fight for leading position during the first half of the race. The first race in the contest was sailed this morning, but was called °ff when no boat reached home after the time limit of three hours had exPired. The Canterbury challenger Avenger leading throughout, and would have won convincingly, as she was only ten minutes from the finishing line when time expired.
