GRAND THEATRE
TO-NIGHT Admirers of the beautiful Joan Bennett are both surprised and gratified over the new Joan that Hollywood has developed — a girl who proves in "Hush Money," now at the Grand Theatre, that she can do other things beside radiate beauty from the screen. As Janet Gordon, in this Fox film, she plays her first really emotional role. The early sequences of the screen play find her a young and beautiful girl, driven by poverty to accept the patronage of a presumably cultured and wealthy man. When she learns that the man is merely a racketeer, a wolf in sheep's clothing, she is forced to become one of his gang. Eventually she and the rest of the gang fall foul of the law and receive prison terms. On her release from prison she determines to go straight and is helped in that determination by a big, hard-boiled but soft-heart-ed detective, who has taken a friendly interest in her. Hardie Albright is co-featured with Miss Bennett, playing the role of the husband, and the supporting cast includes C. Henry Gordon, Douglas Cosgrove, Myrna Loy and George Raft. Sidney Lanfield directed.
