RATES REDUCED

GOYERNMENT SUBSIDY MAKES FURTHER REDUCTIONS POSSIBLE. TWENTY-FIVE PER CENT REBATE Under the provisions of the Finance Act, 1931, the Public Works Department forwarded to the "Rotorua County Council on Wednesday the sum of £849 16s 6d, subsidy in accordance with seetion 45. The question arose as to whether the money should be held for a further reduction made in the rates, which had already been reduced by 12! per cent. The chairman would like to give some further help to the ratepayers, but the position was diffieult. If they reduced the rates by 25 per cent. they might have to increase them again. Cr. Keith thought the Council should show appreciation of those who had paid their rates and a further reduction should be made. The chairman pointed out that there was no guarantee that the Government would continue the subsidy next year and it might then be necessary I to increase rates again by 15 per j cent. Cr. Smythe pointed out that vaiua- ! tions were continually going up 'and there had been no real reductions. J Finally, on the motion of Cr. Keith, it was decided to make a further reduction of 12! per cent. on all rates paid before March 31. :
