HELP FOR MAORIS
ASSISTANCE ASKED FOR TO BREAK IN NEW BLOCKS. sUPPORT BY COUNTY COUNCIL. A deputation of Maoris headed by Mr. R. Vercoe waited upon the Rotorua County Council on Wednesday afternoon for the purpose of seeking aelp to develop 2000 acres of land m the Maniatutu River in the vicinity rf Lake Rotoiti. The owners wished ihe Council to assist them in obtain■,ng support from the Unemployment Board while the work of development vvas in progress. They pointed out :hat part of the land had been clear3d. Of one 1400-acre block about 200 acres was clear and on another block af 600 acres approximately 100 acres rad been cleared. The Maoris would j ae satisfied to obtain enough to support them during operations. After general discussion the counril decided to ask the Minister of Unemployment to endeavour to provide ;he Maoris with assistance in the rature of sustenance wages to enable them to develop sufficient land to ^row crops and support themselves.
