Motorist and Cyclist Collide. On Saturday afternoon a boy named Leo Lowe, aged 14 years, employed by the Wallace Supply Stores, was knocked from his bicycle by a motor car driven by.Mrs. W. H. Smith. The car struck the lad as it entered Erueera Street from Fenton Street. His parcels were scattered over the road!way and the boy's machine was damaged, but he sufFered no personal injury. Bathing Weather With the summer holidays has come J the call to the water. Those in a j position to do so are making the most' 8 of the excellent beaches near at hand, while in Rotorua the baths a^e r very popular, especially the new Brue Bath. During the daytime mr.ny bathers visit Sulphur and Picnic Points, to take advantage of the cool waters of the lake. Picnickers hr /e found excellent shade under the trees near Picnic Point, and several parties are to be seen there daily. Whaka Geysers Quiet Whakarewarewa is fairly quiet at present and the different pools and geysers are not as active as usual. Few have been fortunate enough reI cently to see Pohutu in action. This j lack of activity is thought to be partly due to the state of Lake Rotorua, which is unusually low. When the lake level rises once more, the thermal activity will probably increase. * Rotary Club Luncheon The first meeting of the Rotorua Rotary Club since its Christmas and New Year adjournment, was held yesterday. Only fourteen members attended. Mr. J'. D. Davys occupied the chair. After luncheon, Mr. J. Hamilton, of Hastings, commenced a discussion on the gold standard which interestingly occupied the remainder of the time. Varied Sport at Tarawera An unusual variety of sport was enjoyed during the weelc-end by a small party of Rotorua sportsmen. In one day on Lake Tarawera and the slopes of Tarawera Mountain they caught five fish, shot two pigs and a deer and caught a fawn alive. This area has become noted in recent years for the excellent and varied game available, and many sportsmen, hoth residents of and visitors to the district, have marked out what they call their "own little areas." Saturday's Bowling The Saturday singles and pairs matches of the Rotorua Bowling Club were continued at the week-end in fine weather. The rinks were all in excellent condition dnd some very close games were witnessed. In the singles Lee defeated Fowkes on the last head by the small margin of 18 to 17 and in the pairs Sherriff and Tapper were victorious against Butt and Bertram, hut only hy 20 to 19. Most of the other games were won decisively. Following are the results: — Singles: Lee 18, beat Fowkes 17; Wash 24, beat Polglase 7 ; Butt 22, beat Brown-

Caretaker at High School Out of 250 applications for the position of caretaker at the Rotorua High School the Board of Governors has decided on Mr. and Mrs. E. Pearce, of Tarewa Road, Rotorua. The position was formetly held by Mr. and Mrs. Macdowall, who resigned at the commencement of the Christmas holidays. Motor Cars Collide Two motor-cars collided at the intersection of Fenton and Victoria Streets yesterday, but no one was hurt and both vehicles escaped with only slight damage. One car, driven by a lady, commenced to turn from Fenton Street into Victoria Street when the other came up from behind and the driver not noticing any signal tricd to pass. Failure to Maintain Leonard J. P. Kelly was brought hefore Messrs. Griffiths and Larnach, J.'sP. in the Rotorua -Police Court yesterday morning eharged with failing to provide maintenance for his wife and child. A remand to Auckland was granted. Gaming Charges. • As the result of a police raid on the hairdressing premises of Mr. J. Braken, of Whakatane, several arrests were made. Bracken was eharged with conducting a gaming house, and R. King, R. Newth, A. Bur?ess, L. Martin, W. Hutton, T. Sturdy and D. Lucas were eharged with beng on the premises without lawful axcuse. The accused were all remand2d to appear before the magistrate at Whakatane on January 19.
