^ A surprise visit was paid to Whakatane by Detective McLeod, of Gisborne, on Saturday, as the result of which the proprietor of a tobacconist and barber shop and seven other men will be charged before the Police Court in Whakatane on January 19 with various breaches of the Gaming Act. Detective McLeod was accompanied by Sergeant Bracken, of Opotiki, and was later joined by two constables from Whakatane. 25 YEARS AGO.
