Valuable Agricultural Land
What is claimed to be the most highly priced agricultural land in the world is in the Canary Islands, and is used for the cultivation of the bahana. Mr. John P. Trant, the British Consul at Teneriffe, in his report on the islands' economic conditions, states that the land used for growing bananas may be valued at anything up to £1000, £1500, and even £2000 per acre. The fact that a higher return can he obtained from bananas than from any other crop accounts in part for this high valuation. Of the 8,000,000 bunches produced, valued at £2,000,000, less than 1,000,000 bunches, representing a value of £621,392 went to the United Kingdom in 1930.
