PUBLIC LIBRARY

H. L.

MUSGRAVE.

MARY STUART

BOYD.

(To the Editor). Sir, — The letter appearing in your paper of the 9th inst., re our Borough library is well overdue and quite true in, the facts stated. It is praetically impossible to get a new book, and the whole library lacks any semblance of business management. There is a so-called library eommittee of the Council that has never gone near the library or taken any interest in its working during theii j term of office. A subscriber is en-' titled to two books and two magazines, but this is of less value than appears, as there are never two magazines under two years old in at any one time. I have been repeatedly told that a certain magazine has been on order for the past two years. Th'e subscription was doubled last year, and we were informed that the facilities would be improved, but the service is actually worse. For the size of Rotorua our public library is a disgrace and it is time some other form of management was instituted. I have been a subscriber for many years but have now given up in disgust. — I am, etc.

Rotorua, 9/1/32.

(To the Editor). Sir, — As one having experience of libraries in different parts of the world, I trust you will allow me the privilege of referring to certain adverse criticisms of the Rotorua Public Library, that appear in the "Rotorua Morning Post" of this date. As a visitor to Rotorua, who joined the library for a month, I have been surprised, and gratified, by the exeellent assortment of up-to-date literature obtainable there, a selection that includes the notable "Story of San Michele," an expensive work in which certain larger libraries have hesitated to invest. I do not refer to my own case alone, when I say that every consideration is given by the courteous and capable librarian to subscribers who take the trouble to make their desires known to her. — I am, etc.

Rotorua, 9/1/32.
