DUNEDIN CROWD DEMANDS RELIEF FOR ALL OR NONE POLICE SAVE SITUATION

By Telegraph— Copyright).

DUNEDIN, Saturday. A large demortstration of felief workers culminated in a vigorous attempt to break into the grocery premises Of Messrs. Wardell Bros. At 10 o'eloek a crowd gathered at the Octagon and marched to the Hospital Board's office to repeat their demahds for relief. The board said it Would deal with individual cases; but the cry, "All must get it, or nobody," was raised; and after several women, whoSe cases Were investigated, were turned away because their husbands had had soitte WOrk this week, the crowd in an angry mood marched to Wardell's chantihg, "We Want work." Although confronted by PoliceSuperintendent Eceles and a body of constables they made a desperate attempt to ettter the premises to help themselves. The onrush was beaten back, and much haranguing took place. A plate glass Window was broken in the shop, and a detective received a huge lump of brick and mortar on his leg. The police were very tactful and little hostility was shown to them as individuals. There was practically nq violence during the demonstration, and the police handling of the situation was most pfaiseworthy. The smashed plate glass window seems to he the scrle casualty. The crowd, however, became so great that all traffic was suspended betWeen 11 a.m. and 1 p:m. By this time ortly some 300 persons were in the crowd, but when an attempt was made to run trams through, some women lay down on the rails and the manager suspended the main street traffic irt the meantime.
