SENATE ELECTION
final count for new south wales seats COUNTRY PARTY SUCCESSS SYDNEY, Saturday. The checking of preference votes -for New South Wales candidates for •the Senate was completed last night. The two remaining seats went to Mt Charles Hardy, a Country Party nominee, and Mr. Massey Greene, the United Australia Party member, who was formerly a member of the Senate. Mr. Hardy's majority over his nearest opponent, Mr. C. E. Andersofi, who was a Langite, was 273,903. Mr. Greene's majority was 155,979. Senate counts in other States, excepting Tasmania, al*e still proceeding. The election to the Senate of Mr. Hardy my have an important bearing on the future of politics in Australia. He eame into prominence on the rising tide of teactioft to the Federal Labour Administration, and at the timo of the recent elections the pr'edictiofi was made that he might be expected to tise to a high place of leadership. From being a business man in the inland town of Wagga, New South Wales, he had a meteoric rise to political prominence through the part he took in welding the factions of the Country Party in Australia. On the eve cf the election he had flown 50,000 miles in the cause of a forceful campaign, and on retuming to his home town was accorded oue of the greatest receptions on record. A capable business man and la (trenchant speaker, Senator Hardy is expected to become a force in Federal politics. Senator Massy Greene was a member of the House of Representatives from 1910 to 1922, and held various Ministerial posts. He was first elected to the Senate in 1923.
