MAJESTIC

SATURDAY — MATINEE 2 P.M. "The Virtuous Sin," with Walter Huston, Kay Francis and Kenneth MacKenna. Marya Ivanova, wealthy and beautiful Russian girl, surrenders to Lieutenant Victor Sablin's plea for marriage, eautioning him that she still is unconvinced that their affeetion will ever turn to real love. Sablin is a young medical student on the threshold of a remarkable discovery, a serum for a fatal human ill. War is declared, Sablin being called from his rating as a reserve officer. Convinced that he would be of greater value to Russia in his laboratory, Marya goes to General Gregori Platoff, stern Russian general, to plead for her mate's exemption. Platoff, more military machine than man, curtly refuses. Sablin proves a poor soldier in theaccepted sense of the word; his interest in medical research resulting in neglect of duty until he is summoned before the general. Maddened by Platoff 's sarcasm, Sablin berates him for refusing his transfer to the medical corps. When the two meet again, the infuriated Sablin insults the general and flays the whole Russian army system. Platoff's reply is an order de'manding his execution in seven days for sedition. Marya hurries to the general's headquarters' town, knowing that the brusque leader will not he swayed by tears or pleas. Platoff, who is intrig- : ued by her culture within two days, has f allen deeply in love with her, j and she, with him. He proposes, but i she is unable either to accept or re- ; fuse. At the moment she also finds ! herself unable to plead for Sablin's : life. Next morning she asks for her | husband's life, and Platoff is enraged f in the belief that the whole affair was j plotted to save Sablin. He harshly refuses. Platoff's sense of fairness causes him to pardon Sablin and restore him to duty. The husband learns that his 1 life has been gained by his wife. Platoff offers Sablin a transfer to a medical unit, and he refuses, telling the general that he must first find — • and kill — the man whom he believes betrayed his wife. The general says that he is the man — but the attempt ton his life by Sablin is foiled. Sablin is killed in action. Platoff returns woulded to pursue his romance with Marya.
