LOCAL AND GENERAL

Mean Trick Aftei* a Rotorua motorist had fully prepared his car for an early start on a trip to Auckland reeently and had ieft the vehicle outside his residence for the night, he found in the morning that his previously full benzine tank had practically been emptied and that only about half an inch of benzine was left. Poor Practical Joke. What might be called a practical joke by some people was perpetrated on a resident of Rotorua who had driven his motor-car to the outskirts of the town reeently to transact some business. He left the vehicle for a few minutes by the roadside. Wbch driving back in to town the car stopped and had to be towed the remainder of the distance by a gavage service wagon. On examihaUon it was found that during the owncr's short ahsence a quantity of sugar had been poured into the benzine tank. Collapsed by Roadside A young man, aged 26 years, was | found lying in a state of collapse on the roadside near Tikitere on Wednesday afternoon by a party of Rotorua mo'torists. He was in a very weak condition. The travellers brought him into Rotorua and on the Instruetion of the police he was admitted to King George V. Hospital.

Balloons Returned Only four balloons had been returned to the Rotorua Borough Council office up until yesterday afternoon of those released on New Year's Eve in the balloon distance competition in connection with carnival week. One was picked gup at Picnic Point, two in Eruera Street, and one in the Government Gardens. The final date on whieh returned balloons will be received has not yet been decided by the Amusement Committee. County Employee Injiired A painful injury was received by Mr. John Saies, a Rotorua County Council employee, yesterday' morning. While at work laying large concrete pipes in a culvet one of the "pipes. accidently fell on his right foot, crushing it. He was immediately taken on one of the council's motor-trucks to King George V. Hospital. It is nnderstood that a pipe was being laid with an endless chain pulley and Mr. Saies was making some adjustment when the lashings broke and the pipe fell on his foot.

Week of Prayer Campaign The first of a series of meetings in connection with the World EvangeliI cal Societies Week of Prayer, was I held in St. John's Presbyterian ! Church on Wednesday evening, Rev. j A. C. Randerson, M.A., B.D., presiding. Rev. F. H. .Spencer spoke on the j society's campaign for peace and re- | ligious unity throughout the world, and other speakers also took part. The final meeting will be held this evening at 7.30. Stream and River Fishing Stream and river fishing in the Rotorua and Taupo districts is not at present returning good results and the majority of anglers are coneentrating upon the lalce waters. Experienced anglers who have noted re- . sults over a period of years are generally of the opinion that the stream j and river fishing does not become j really worth while until the middle or ! end of March. This period, however, may fluctuate according to the weather conditions and the amount of water which the streams are carrying. Low Level of Lakes • Lalce Rotorua has now fallen to within an inch of its lowest recorded level of last year, and all other district lakes are also steadily falling. Lake Waikaremoana is exceptionally low, and general indications are that a further low- level record will be set this summer. Fry Taking Well The Department of Internal Affairs completed trout fry liberations during the latter end of October, and the results of the liberations are' already very apparent in a number of the lakes, where excellent "strilces" of fry may be seen in the shallows. The shoals of the small fish show that the fry are developing fast and are in very promising condition.

Trout Feed Trout feed is particularly plentiful in all the Rotorua lakes at present and this is complicating the task of anglers with artificial lures. A recent catch, when cleaned, showed that the fish had been feeding on lake shell fish ctf several varieties, the pupae of the dragqn fly, the green beetle, the koura, the bully, and varieties of water beetle. The plentitude of feed is having a noticeable effect in the rapid improvement in the condition of the fish.
