LOCAL AND GENERAL
Distingmshed Visitors Distinguished visitors who will •shortly visit Rotorua are Lord and Lady Latymer and Sir Douglas and Lady Ilall. . Sir Douglas Hall is a very keen angler and sportsman and with Lady Hall has visited Rotorua on a number of occasions. No Single Men Working Eighty-seven ' married men are working on unemployment relief work this week on a slight reduction of time, but no money is available to give single men employment. Haymaking, however, which is in full swirig on the farms around the disjtrlct, 'has relieved the situation to a icertain extent. Mail and Telegrams . A total of 183 bags of mail war received at the Rotorua Post Ofuco dr^ing the period D'ecember 22 — 26 and : 115 bags sent out. Over 'the same period last year, 176 inward bags wero received and 110 outward bags despatched. There was a reduction of about 2 00 telegrams both received and sent, the figures being 776 qnd 993 respectively. Assessor Needed So numerous have been the cases of dam'aged cars in the Rotorua district over the holiday period that the North Island Motor Union is sending an assessor to Rotorua to deal with a number of the claims arising out of accidents. All garages have had an exceptionally large amount of repair work to carry out, and break-down vans have been frequently requisitioned. Unemployment Board Business. Me'ssrs. J. S. Jessep (deputy chairman), P. R. Clynie and W. Bromley, members of the Unemployment Board, who have been visiting. Rotorua on Unemployment Board business, leave this morning for Whakatane and Opotiki in continuation of investigations upon which they are at present engaged. The three members of the Board expect to return to Rotorua on Thursday. 'Baths Popular The popularity of the new BTue bath and the Ward baths is evideneed by the exceptionally heavy business done at both during the Christmas and New Year week. For the period December 23 to December 31, 3704 persons paid for admission to the Ward baths and 3028 for admission to the Blue bath, while the volume of business has been steadily maintained since Christmas. It is understood that the revenue returns from the Blue bath are regarded as extremely satisfactory. Motor Camp Appreciated A mepiher of a party of Wellington motorists, who have made a comprehensive tour of the North Islandduring the holidays, staying in the motor camps at the centres visited, told a representative of the' "Post" yesterday that in the opinion of his party the Rotorua Borough camp was easily the most attractive and comfortable they had seen. "We found it so attractive, and so comfortably equipped," he said, "that instead of staying the two days we originally intended, we have stayed five days." Road Surfaces The dust nuisance is very prevalent on practically all the district roads at present, and particularly on the Te Ngae Road where the traffic has been particularly heavy. Rain would assist in laying the dust, although so far as surface is concerned, all roads are standing up to the heavy traffic wonderfully well. The contrast between the pumice surface in the Rotorua area and the shingle surface in outside districts, is very noticeable and provides a comparison very much in favour of the pumice. All shingle surfaced roads which have been carrying a fair volume of traffic, are badly corrugated and are consequently very much heavier upon the vehicles using them. An example of this the main Rotorua-Hamilton-Auckland Road which at present has a 'most uneven and badly corrugated surface. Anniversary Day Carnival. In view of the success of the New Year's Day beach carnival at Cochrane Park on the Ohau Channel, Mr. J. W. Cochrane proposes organising another very pleasant afternoon on Friday, 'January 29, Anniversary Day. Preliminary arrangements are already being made for an entirely novel Maori entertainment on the channel with war and poi canoes, while another rodeo will also be organised. On this occasion, however, the race will he widened and a different type of steers obtained, steps which will minimise the delay and make the task of the riders more difficult. Two heats for a horse swimming race are already available and extensive water sports will be organised. In addition, Mr. Cochrane has several entirelly new items under consideration, and altogether proposes to submit an even bigger and better edition of the programme which proved so successful on New Year's Day.
