BONE SHIP

INTERESTIN G RELXC NOW IN WANGANUI MUSEUM. Some time ago a model of a French line-of-battleship was presented to the Wanganui museum by the Tizard family. The model was carved from bone by a French prisoner of war during the Napoleonic Wars and every detail or rigging and structure had heen meticulously regarded by the workman. Time, however, had destroyed many of the features of the ship and during the past few months the Director of the Museum, Mr. J. H. Burnet, has been engaged in repairing the model and trying to find something of its history. At one time a silver plate had heen fixed to the stern with the name inscribed, but this has carefully been picked out at some time or other. . The only other method of identifica- > tion is the figurehead of Caesar, which was the name of one of the French i battleships. j It is thought the model might have ; belonged at one time to a eolleetion ; which was started by Oliver Cromwell ; and continued by Samuel Pepys, and j which was broken up in comparatively recent times.
