BRADMAN & WOODFUL SPARKLING DISPLAYS ADD 328 TO AUSTRALIA'S SCORE TAIL'S SENSATIONAL FAILURE

Rec. Jan. 4, 7.40 p.m. MELBOURNE, Monday. The weather was glorious for the resumption of the Test match, Australia v. South Africa. There was a remarkable -scene when the crowds rushed the gates to see Bradman, resulting in an enormous attendance for the beginning of the fourth day. Bradman reached his century with the first ball of the day, by a drive for three off Quinn. He was subdued during the early stages, but subsequently was at the top of his form, scoring in all parts of the field.

Woodful reached his century in 212 minutes, the partnership scoring 200 in 140 minutes. When the patnership realised 236, all second wicket records in Test cricket were eclipsed, mainly as a result Of vigorous batting by Bradman. The third century was posted in 224 minutes. Throughout, the bowling maintained a high standard. Bradman was dismissed within five minutes of luncheon. He batted in all 180 minutes, and added 70 in 85 minutes during the morning. He hit' 18 ' boundaries, a memorable innings. His partnership with Woodful added 274 in 183 minutes. Although the batting was more subdued after Bradman's dismissal, runs continued to come steadily, and 400 was reached in 291 minutes. Woodful was dismissed by a nice catch in the slips. He played a characteristic fighting hand for 300 minutes, during which he hit five boundaries. Proceedings were much duller during the Kippax-McCabe partnership. At the tea interval the score was three wiekets for 455. Kippax reached the half century in 122 minutes. Then McCabe gave the crowd a thrill, pulling Vincent over

the, rails for a great sixer. He reached 50 in 74 minutes. Kippax, taking a sporting risk, struck out vigorously, but after several escapes he was nicely caught at deep eover. His partnership with McCabe realised 111. Two runs later McCabe was 'taken in the slips .Rigg was dismissed in the slips by a good catch. Three runs later Oldfield was out. McMillan had taken three wiekets for three runs in four overs. When a'Beekett was bowled there was great excitement at the sensational collapse, five wiekets having fallen for nine runs. The attendance totalled 32,000 and the receipts £1977.
