PHAR LAP SAILS
SPECIALLY BUILT QUARTERS ON _____ MONOWAI. There was not the big crowd present to see Phar Lap continue on his voyage to America that there was when he arrived at Wellington from Sydney by the Ulimaroa on November 24, just five weeks ago. The great horse was put aboard the Monowai some three hours before she sailed, thus giving the general public no op- : portunity to view the embarkation. - Phar Lap's speeially-built quarters on the fore deck are very spacious. His box and exercise yard have. been | floored with coeoanut matting, over , which has been spread sand: In the j exercise yard, which is 2,0ft by 30ft, there has heen put twelve tons of sand, and here he will be regularly exercised and allowed to roll. On his arrival at San Franciseo, where the Monowai is due on January 15, Phar Lap will he taken into the open country as soon as possible. Mr. D. J. Davis, his part-owner, who is at present in America, has made ar- , rangements to have him rested for .a week or ten days in a Calfornian valley before the final stage of the journey to Agua Caliente is undertaken, and it is hoped to have him in Mexico early in February, about seven weeks before the race for the Agua Caliente Handicap.
Phar Lap's feed for the first few months in America has already heen dispatched, and consisted of South Australian dun oats, chaff, bran and oaten hay. A ton of Otago hay was taken on the Monowai as his feed on the voyage.
