FEELING OF OPTIMISM GROWS EVIDENT IN AUSTRALIA PEOPLE SPEND MORE FREELY

SYDNEY, Thursday. Th Commonwealth Savings Bank's deposits throughout the Commonwealth on September 30 totalled £139,581,000, maintaining the increase which began in July, and as the increase continues the' prospects for the new year are ragarded with optimism. The Commonwealth Bank returns show that the note issue increased £1,000,000 in the past week, to £54,803,000 at December 28. The total increase for three weeks was £3,000,000 or £500,000 more than a year ago, indicating a greater freedom in expenditure during the Christmas season. The bank's assets total £55,299,000, including gold £10,500,000 and debentures and other securities, £44,234,000. ^?he ratio of gold to notes in 19.16 per cent. In the banking department the deposits total £48,482,000; money in London, £13,795,000; 'Government securities, £28,794,000; and short « loans and discounts, £12,185,000. The ratio of cash to deposits is 12.58 per cent.
