FATALITY IN OPENING EVENT AT ELLERSLIE MEETING DEATH ON WAY TO IIOSPITAL
— By Telegrapli — Copyright)
AUCKLAND, Tuesday. An accident occurred in the first race, the Fergusson Handicap, at Ellerslie, to-day resulting in the death on his way to the Auckland hospital, of the successful light-weight horsemen, PI. E. Stockley. Stockley who was riding Exaggeration had proved himself one of the best apprentice riders in New Zealand. The accident occurred soon after the field had passed the first furlong post. The leading horses were racing in close company. Exaggeration was running up fast on the outside of a couple of horses and went down suddenly, Stockly being thrown heavily. It appears that he was struck after ^falling, by a couple of horses just behind. After the field had passed he lay postrate on the ground. He was hurried to the hospital by the ambulance, but before he could be admitted he died from head and other injuries. An inquiry into the accident was opened by the Stewards and adjourned until Thursday.
