> " • GALCUTTA, Sunday. Pandit Jai'waharlal Ffehru, the most uncompromising of -all the National Congress leaders and his brother, who were arrested yesterday, have been placed in the Naidi gaol where they will be tried next week. In consequence of their arrest the Bombay congressmen decided to abandon the public reception arranged for Gandhi's arrival from Europe to-morrow. "Following the arrest of Abdul Gaffur Khan, British and Indian troops. marched through the city and large numbers were held in readiness outside, but up to the present there have been no developments. The inhabitants generally are friendly disposed towards the troops. The wearing of the Red Shirt uniform has been banned throughout the frontier districts. Over 400 Red Shirts have been arrested. The situation in the United Provinces has improved. The district authorities are hopeful of realising the rent arrears without diffieulty. A meeting at Poona presented Subhas Chandra Bose, a Bengal Congress chief, with an address of welcome enclosed within the muzzle of a silver revolver. A round-up of revolutionary suspects in Eastern Bengal is proceeding. The many people arrested include eig'ht men known to be connected with the Chittagong armoury raid last year. A strong watch is maintained on European clubs, restaurants, business premises, and the residences of prominent people, owing to the anticipation that the anarchists will attempt a desperate concerted attack before-they are trapped by the slowly tightening police net.
