MEN'S SCHEME FOR RATIONING WORK EXPLAINED BY PRESIDENT "WOULD NOT RAISE COSTS"
. — By Telegraph — Copyright).
HUNTLY, Saturday. Discussing the miners' conference in Auckland with the coal-mine owners, Mr. A. Robinson, president of the Northern District Council of Miners, said that the aim of the men's representatives was to devise some scheme of rationing work, so that none of the 262 who have heen dismissed would . he entirely unemployed. It would mean a big sacrifice for some, but on the other hand it would mean some work for all.According to the scheme submitted, the Pukemiro men would lose one week's work in every fivej the Taupiri and Renown men would go off every other week;- the Glen Afton and Macdonald miners would lose one week in ten, and the Wilton men one week in every 21. The men's representatives said they were satisfied that under the schemethe overhead costs of working would be no higher than under the mineowners' scheme, but the owners said that a similar scheme when tried had raised overhead costs and impaired working efficiency. The owners would not discuss a suggested reorganisation of the industry by an agreement to pool and distribute orders.
