VETERAN SURVIVORS OF THE BATTLE OF MONS
— By Telegraph — Copyright) .
LONDON, December 25. An ex-officer announced he would present a Christmas hamper to the first war crock. He invited applications from men who had been wounded earlier than August 27, 1914,* and received 150 letters from Mons' veterans, many- of whom are still disabled. The hamper will go to Stoker J. Dale, of Cillingham, who was wounded aboard H.M.S. Lark when she attempted to rescue the survivors of H.M.S. Amphion, which struck a mine. Many of the letters were most pathetic. They described how the heroes of the earliest war days are now fighting unemployment and poverty. One concluded: "The larder is empty, the grate ditto, but the spirit lives."
