LOCAL AND GENERAL

Not on the Programme At the Amateur Athletic Club's sports meeting on Saturday an event not on the programme attracted the attention of a large section of the spectators during the progress of one of the official events. A difference of opinion developed between two small boys, who promptly proceeded to "fight it out" under more or less catch-as-eatch-can rules with an occasional punch for good measure. The world apparently still loves a fight, even of the small boy variety. Use of Microphone Although excellent arrangements were made at the Town Square on Saturday night for the broadcasting by loud speaker of the proceedings of Mephistopheles' Court, the plaeing of the microphone in relation to the speakers was often so faulty that little or no benefit was derived and those at the back of the crowd were frequently quite unable to hear what was being said by either the judge or his victim. The prosecutor, being possessed of a voice of good carrying i power was not handicapped to anyi thing like the same extent. . Blue Bath Popular I The new Blue Bath is proving one j of the most popular attractions in Rotorua. At most hours throughout the day and evening the bath presents a scene of animation, crowds , of people of all ages and both sexes obviously enjoying the very excellent provision made for their pleasure and comfort. Holiday Weather Not for years has Rotorua been favoured with such ideal holiday weather as has this year contributed to the enjoyment of the Christmas holidays. The days have been hright and sunny with just enough breeze to temper the power of the sun and the evenings have been cairn and cool. Present indications justify the expec- ; tation of a continuance of sunny weai ther. ! j Rabbit Comes to Town } Apparently desirous of joining in | Rotorua's Christmas carnival, a ' young and frisking rabbit was noticed | on Boxing Day disporting itself in Eason Street. When approaehed it 1 retired hastily to a garden which con- : tained quantities of nice young cab- ! bages, lettuce and other succulent dainties. Evidently Master Rabbit ; lcnows his way about. i j Wild Cberrles. j The wild cherry groves on the j shores of the Rotorua lakes are now I bearing ripe fruit and with the acI quisition born of native shrewdness, the small Maori children yesterday did a busy trade, selling the scarlet j fruit on the roadsides to passing mo- | torists. A long bough laden with , fruit and a wide smile were their stock in trade. | Busy Roads. J The road on the Six Lakes trlp was I particularly busy yesterday and it was evident that the charm of this j delightful drive had attracted many i holiday makers. The volume of the traffic could be estimated when a minor accident to a car on one of the sharp hends round Lake Rotoiti, held up a long queue of travellers in five minutes. Double Accident. i A double accident occurred at | about 5.30 o'clock on Saturday eveni ing on the main Rotorua-Hamilton j highway when a motor-lorry, driven | by Mr. Donald Morrison, of TaruI kenga after a minor collision with I a motor car driven hy Mr. Alexander j Clarke of Palmerston North, on a sharp bend about six miles from Rotorua, proceeded a short distance on j the journey and then went over a bank on the wrong side of the road and rolled on its side. It is understood that the first accident was caused through a heavy cloud of dust obscuring the view. Mr. Herbert Hoffman was slightly injured when the lorry left the road, but the driver and other passengers were not ' injured. The motor car suffered a crumpled ' mud-guard. i Cochrane Park Carnival. New Year's Day will see a really j unique carnival staged at one of th6 ] finest scenic spots around Rotorua — j Cochrane Park. There, is the one j real sandy beach of the district, and ' this undoubted attraction will be 1 greatly augmented by the various ! spectacular events for which final ar- I rangements have almost been com- ! pleted. The channel is being kept j clear and ready for use on the great j day, which promises to be unique in the history of Rotorua. A number of entries for all events have been received, particularly for the launch and speed boat races. Huia, the wonder diving girl with amaze you with her skill.*
