Work Retarded. Workmen have now completed over half of the two and a-half miles of new bitumen surface which is being laid on the Wairoa Road. Unfortunately adverse conditions have retarded the work considerably as there have been only two days suitable for tar spraying, Had conditions been more favourable, the whole of the work would have been completed before Christmas. Tar spraying cannot be carried out when there is a heavy mqisture content in the air, and humid conditions prevalent during the past few days have been entirely unsuitable for the work. Orakei-korako Road. A motorist who recently made the trip to Orakei-korako reports that the road is passable for cars right up to the river, and although it requires careful negotiation, provides | thermal sights and scenery which well | repay the trip. Two streams have to be forded but these should give no trouble to the average car. The theri mai activity at Orakei-korako is l among the most remarkable and spectacular in the whole of the thermal area, but owing to the difficulty of access, *is very little visited. Road Conditions. During the past few days, the patf oi officer of the Auckland Automobile Association has been engaged in checking up road conditions throughout the Rotorua district. The officer reports that all roads are in reasonably good condition and promise to be ,in good surface for the holiday traffic. The new 'Te Puke-Tauranga Road is to be opened up for the holiday season, and should be in good order. A.A.A. Patrol. A patrol officer of the Auckland Automobile Association has been stationed in the Rotorua district until January 11 for the -purpose of assisting members of the association and other association affiliated under the N.Z.A.A.A. The patrol will be in attendance at the Borough Motor Camp each day in the morning and afternoon. Motor Camp. Preparations for -the holiday season at the Borough Motor Camp have now been completed and a final tidying up is being carried 'out. Hot water and other " f acilities are now available, and the camp generally, is in excellent order. A number of campers are already on the ground and reservations have been heavy over the holiday period. Governor at Galatea. His Excellency, the Governor General, Lord Bledisloe, during his recent tour of the Galatea Estate, was particularly interested in the varying. grades of country on the property and the costs of fencing and roading. His Excellency, at the conclusion of the tour, stated that he was most impressed with the prospects of the block for developmental purposes. Boxing Day Bowling. A friendly pairs bowling tournament will be played on the rinlcs in the Government Grounds on Boxing Day.. The tournament is open to both club members and visitors. Yuletide Conqert. The Yuletide concert which is to be held in the Town Square on Christmas night, will now he given by combined -Maori cho'irs. It was originally intended that combined Rotorua church choirs should supply the programme, but an alteration has now been made which will place the programme in the hands of . the Maori choirs.

Tennis Tournament. Good entries have been received for the Rotorua Lawn Tennis Club's championship and handicap tournament which opens on the Government grounds courts on Christmas Day. The programme includes men's and ladies' championship singles; men's and ladies' championship doubles; mixed championship doubles; men's and ladies' handicap singles; men's and ladies' handicap doubles, and mixed handicap doubles.
