AUCKLAND, Wednes. The Melanesian Mission steamer, the Southern Cross, which returned to Auckland 'to-day from a cruise of the mission field, was at the Solomon Islands at the time of the recent disascriuse to the Group she carried a number of missionaries, who were recuperating after their exciting aud strenuous experiences. Although in the affeeted area, the vessl experienced only minor shocks. On the return voyage to New Zealand, the steamer sprang a slight leak, 3£ miles out of Vila, and during the remaining four days before reaching Auckland the crew had to man the pumps and employ buclcets to prevent the water rising. The water appeared to he in the coal bunkers, but it was impossible to locate the leak at sea, and the vessel will probably have to be docked before repairs can be effected. She developed a list of 15 degrees.
