FIRST MAORI STUDENT TO BE A PRESBYTERIAN MINISTER At an impressive ceremony, Mr. Hemi Potatau, son of Mr. Hata Potatau, of Nuhaka, was recently licensed by- the Hawke's Bay Presbytery to preach the Gospel. The event, which took place at Hastings, was unique in the history of the Presbyterian Church in New Zealand, Mr. Potatau being the first Maori student to become a Presbyterian minister. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev. J. A. Asher, Napier, who was accompanied by members of the presbytery of Hawke's Bay and a number of representative elders. Mr. Potatau is 27 years ofhge, and received -his training at Scots College, Wellington, Otago University, and the Presbyterian Theological Ha-ll, Dunedin, where he was for six years resident at Knox College. His first work as a fully-ordained minister will be in association with the ReV. John Laughton, Maori missionary at Taupo.
