excellent entries MANY OUTSTANDING VISITING ATHLETES TO 'COMPETE CHAMPIONS IN ACTION Excellent entries have been received by the Rotorua Athletic Club for its first full day meeting, to be held in the Government Grounds on Boxing Day. Although the elub has been only recently formed, it has already condueted a number of very successful evehing meetings of very forerunner of the programme which is to be submitted on December 26. Over 100 entries have been received in the various athletic events, and approximately 30 in the cycling events. A large number of well-known visiting athletes with New Zealand reputations will be competing and some very keen competition is promised. An attempt to break the New Zealand standard time for the half-mile walk; will be made by S. Gudsell, of Auckland. Gudsell is Auckland halfmile champion and in the Canadian championships in which he recently competed, seeured third place against a very notable field. The New Zealand standard time for the half-mile. distance is 3mins. 15sec. Particular interest will attach to the presence of G. Sullivan, of New Plymouth, who is the present New Zealand hop, step and jump, javelin, and long pump champion. Sullivan is one of the most outstanding performers in the hop, step and jump, which the Dominion has produced. An indication of his ability can be guaged from the fact that the New Zealand standard hop, step and jump distance is 44 feet 6 inches, and that Sullivan has on several occasions. jumped as far as 48 feet, and has approached very close to a world- record. He is a very versatile athlete, as he is the successor to Stan Lav as the New Zealand javelin champion, and is the holder of the Dominion long jump title. Athol Garliek, one time New Zealand University champion quarterm'ler, who is now living in Taupo, will also be competing. Garliek was also the holder of the Auckland title beforo his departure for Taupo, and has been training assiduously for Boxing Day. An outstanding New Plymouth performer is S. A. Black, who on his later performances, is expected to win this year's New Zealand 100 and 220 yards championship. Black' has recently put up some brilliant performances and shonld be at the top of his form on Boxing Day. He will be accompanied by T. K. Cambie, of Hawera, who is regarded as one of the most promising of Taranaki's younger athletes. N. Roberts, who recently won the Auckland secondary schools sprint championship, will be another Auckland competitor. Cambie and Roberts will be together in the quarter-mile, wliere they are on the virtual scratch mark. An Auckland 880 yards competitor will be L. Barker, who has covered the distance in the notable time of two minutes. Barker is a very wellknown half-mile runner, and has some notable performances to his credit. He will be on the virtual scratch mark, and will be conceding a handicap to N. F. Cooper, another well-known Auckland runner, who holds the Auckland three-mile title. H. J. Reid, of Taupo, who has recently been reinstated as an amateur, will also be competing in the sprint events. As a professional, Reid had some outstanding performances to his credit. One of the main events of the day, will be the relay in which teams from New Plymouth, Auckland, and Rotorua-Taupo have entered. In the cycle events, three wellknown visiting wheelmen will be competing. These are H. R. Dwight, L. H. Dwight, and G. P. Clark, of the Manukau Club, Auckland. H. R. Dwight is recognised as one of the most outstanding cycle riders in the Dominion, and has put up some very fine performances. Good entries have also been received in the ladies' events in which considerable interest is being taken. Entries and handicaps in the various events are as follow.
