GOLD HUNT DRAMA

ONLY ONE SURVIVOR IN ILL-FATED PARTY OF THREE Arriving at Nairobi in an exhausted stcte, an ex-pol'ceman named H. T. Grifths told a strange story of . ?. gold-prospecting tragedy in which i he and two companions were involvi ed. states the "Central News." | Griffiths, a few weeks ago, accompanied by Captain Kenneth Savage, , a civil engineer, at one time on the '• staff of the Nigerian Railway, and ' Dr. Charles Hickey, a coffee planter of Ruiru, Kenya, set out from Nairobi by motor^lorry to look for gold in Tanganyika territory. j According to Griffiths's story, they failed to find gold and then ran short of food and money. One day Dr. HHx-ey left in the lorry and never returned. The next day his companions set i out to wallc over 100 miles across : t~ackless bush in the direction of an j administrative post at Kisii in the Kavirondo Reserve, which they "•■^ached after losing count of time. . Here. they received help from a Govj ernment officer, after which -they j ppshed on to Kisumu. On arrival I : there Savage had to go to hospital immediately, and died on the following day. En route for Kisii, Griffiths de- ' clared, they were1 caught in severe thunderstorms, and had to sleep op the ground with only one blanket each. Their only food was pigeons which he shot. The police are now endeavouring to trace Dr. Hickey. Captain Savage's wife and family live at Croydon, England.
