Rec. Dec 21, 7 p.m. SYDNEY, Monday. When the Test Match Australia and South Africa was resumed to-day, the weather was sultry with a slight drizzle. The Australian tail failed to wag. Bell gained three wickets to-day for 14, the Australian innings having yielded 469. The Springboks then commenced a long chase after runs. Christy batted well, hitting McCabe for four houndaries in the second over. Grimmett was brought on and Christy banged him to the fence three times in one over, fifty appearing in 27 minutes. Ironmonger was also clouted to the fence, but he had Christy caught next ball. Christy was their best so far in the match. After lunch, Ball dismissed Mitchell and Cameron with successive balls. Morkel and Taylor followed in quick order and with five down for 100,
one for 100; Vincent, two for 75; Morkel, one for 33; Mitchell, none for 8. SOUTH AFRICA First Innings 153

Africa's position was hopeless. Viljoen was next to fail, the last three wickets having fallen without altering the total. Nine of the ten next overs were maidens. The end was then in sight, but despite the determined stand of Vincent, who has passed the average of his side, Australia inflicted a defeat by an innings and 155 runs. ' Ironmonger deservedly took the honours in the South Africans' second innings. The fielding for the home side was of first class standard.
