Auckland Cup Prospects Gustavo gave a ,very fine display when he won at Dannevirke on Wednesday, and it wAs unfortunate that he was lame after the race, making his appearance in the Auckland Cup doubtful. Gustavo led all the way on Wednesday and was well clear of the field whep. he faltered half a furlong from home. . The horse nearly col- : lapsed, but Wiggins held him together and he went on to win easily. The trouble is in the off foreleg and is an, old one, so that the prospects of Gustavo racing over the holidays are remote. Should Gustavo be an absentee at Ellerslie, it is probable that the capable light-weight rider, H. Wiggins, will be on Jaloux or Admiral Drake in the Auckland Cup. This jockey had these horses and Gustavo to ehoose from, but he . selected the last-named. Dannevirke form indicated that the selection was quite a good one, the apparent breakdown of Gustavo being one of those incidents always to be expected .and feared. It would not be surprising to find Wiggins riding Jaloux in next Saturday's big twomile race, and it must be granted that this Riccarton gelding possesses something better than a mere outside chance. Lively Light-weights For Cup With the Auckland Cup only a week off recent public form points to the distinct possibilities of a couple of good staying light-weights. They are last year's Cup victor, Motere, and the three-year-old Peter Jackson, both of whom made a considerable impression in the Te Awamutu Cup. A Hawke's Bay two-year-old that is pretty smart is Princess Bell, the conquerer of Pillow Fight at Hastings last month, and who at Woodville got to within a length of the same horse after he had beaten the starter badly to get a three or four lengths' break on the field. Princess Bell is expected to be on hand to •contest the minor juvenile events at Ellerslie, and if she is brought north will be well worth following. Gay Crest's Success The saccess achieved by Gay/lrest at Woodville, when he repeated his form of 12 months earlier, clearly indicated that he is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the Auckland Cup. In his Woodville race last week the Riccarton candidate ran true to form, and moreover his rider managed to keep him on a straight course without a great deal of trouble. In view of Gay Crest's wayward tendencies in a race this is important, and it shows that with the same horseman aboard at Ellerslie on Boxing Day he is going to take some beating. It is not surprising that Gay Crest is one of the ruling fancies for the big Auckland two-mile event. As a stayer, Compris is to be recommended for the Auckland Cup, despite his defeats at Woodville. On the first day he was asked to do the impossible, his rider keeping him wide out for most of the journey, so that it was not really remarkable that he failed by a length to *catch Gay Crest. There may be a different story to tell after the Auckland Cup, for in that event he will be ridden by R. Reed, who can be depended upon to keep his mount somewhere near the inside rails for the greater part of the trip. It is difficult to understand just why the connections of Compris should bring a Southern horseman up to Woodville to ride that gelding, when Reed, who had previously been engaged for him at Ellerslie, was on the stand looking at the race. Lack a Likely Favourite There seems little reason to doubt that Lack will be the favourite for the G.N. Foal Stakes on Boxing Day at Ellerslie, but those that saw this youngster gallop between the races at Woodville last week will have a slight suspicion that he has been overdone in his preparation. He looked very fine indeed, and when accompanied by the speedy Golden Wings the two-year-old was frankly outclassed, even allowing for the fact that the three-year-old is one of the fastest in the land and that Lack was not huhted along. Probably if Lack is treated lightly from now on he will have time to freshen up, but one thing is certain; he ,will have to reproduce his best if he is to win the Foal Stakes. Golden Wings. is the early favourite, for the A.R.C. Railway Handicap, and judging by the way in which he sprinted at Woodville last week he is going to be a fit horse on the day. There was no doubt that his G.N. Gpineas form was outstanding, and this he followed up by a very close second to Cimabue in the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap. The Ellerslie track will suit Golden Wings much .better than Riccarton, so that being the case the Lackham gelding ought to retain his favouritism up to starting time. Golden Wings was never at his best when he ran under 1.1 for five furlongs at Woodville, for over most of the journey he was being held back to Lack. That was an impressive Railway Handicap trial.
