-By Telegraph — Copyright).
NEW YORK, Friday. At Albany (New York), Jack Diamond, the notorious gunman, was shot and killed to-day during a party held in celebration of his acquittal yesterday on a kidnapping charge. His assailant is unknown. Jack Diamond was one of the most notorious of New York's gangsters, confidence men and card tricksters. He sprang into international prominence last year when detected at card shprping in a trans-atlantic liner en route to Britain. The British authorities refused him permission to land, a similar fate awaiting him in Belgium and France.. Although he claimed to be a sick man requiring constant attention the passenger steamship companies refused to take him back to New York in any of their vessels, with a result that he went from cu'stody on the Continent to New York on board a cargo boat.
Upon arrival he immediately resumed his underworld activities, and was gravely wounded in an unsavoury affair in an up town hotel. Acting under the pressure of public opinion the police recently took action again1 st him, his release being attendant with the result oufclined in the above cable.
