KING CARNIVAL

Within the next week King Carnival will arrive in Rotorua and such is the magnetism of his personality that .even the , most pessimistie cannot but respond to his call to forget for a while even the present depression ; the sins of the borough council and the income tax demand received as a Christmas box from a Government with a somewhat defective sense' of humour. In order, however, that his Majesty may be adequately received and his reign commenced in circumstances favourable to the spread of his spirit and the continuance of his cheerful outlook, an, immense amount of preparatory work is necessary. Much of this the Carnival Committee, under the chairmanship of Councillor L. J. Bayfeild, and the organiser, Mr. E. M. Finlayson, have already completed but they still need the assistance oi eitizens in several directions and an appeal is made in another column of this issue to persons willing and able to fill the few remaining gaps in the organisation to come forward. Many willing volunteers will doubtless • respond once they know their services are needed. We mention the matter not so much to draw attention to the need as to emphasise the opportunity the carnival will afford the eitizens 6f Rotorua and the thousands of holiday-makers who will visit the town and district to play their part in making the carnival both a light-hearted revel during the week it lasts and a foundation on which to build a more cheerful outlook for the coming year. Depression of any kind is, in the last resort, as its name implies, as much a matter of mental attitude as of material factors and nothing is so quick and effective a corrective as a whole-hearted surrender to the rule of King Carnival.
