MEETING AT ROTOWARO TO DISCUSS REPORT OF DISMISSALS ' APPREHENSION EXPRESSED

HAMILTON, Thursday. A feeling of apprehension is abroad among the miners at the Rotowaro, Pukemiro, Glen Afton and Renown collieries as the result of a report circulated that upward of 300 dismissals will take place in the very near futule. , At the Rotorwaro mine, in which 280 men are employed, a stop-work meeting was held this morning as a protest against the impending diseharge of 88 men. It is understood that a list containing this number of names was handed to the Miners' Union ofiicials to-day. The men have not yet received notice, hut it is public property that they are to go. The Rotowaro mine is owned by Taupiri Mines, Ltd. The men are reticent, and the result of this morning's meeting is not yet lcnown. It is unofficially reported that further dismissals are contemplated, involving the Pukemiro mine, where over 200 men are employed, and the Renown and Glen Afton collieries, which employ over 600 men. Nothing definite is known, but it is stated that the information will be given out this week. The dismissal of the men at this time may have a very far-reaching effect. For months they have been Working on an average four and five days in a fortnight. 'Eumour has it that about 300 men are to be put off at the four mines. The figures are said to be as follows: Pukemiro, 90; Rotowaro, 93; Glen Afton, 70; and Renown, 40.
