PROFICIENCY EXAMS.
CANDIDATES AGITATED BY DISTURBING OUTSIDE PROPAGANDA NELSON INSPECTOR'S REPORT NELSON, Monday, In an interim report to the Education Board on the Proficiency Examination, the Senior Inspector, Mr. Griffin, said the candidates for the most part entejced upon the examina- j tion in an agitated frame of mind, due to. disturbing propaganda, that had emanated from outside sources. : The results were highly satisfactory however. The public schools' results showed that 672 candidates sat | for the examination, and of these 528 gained their proficiency, 109 gained conipetency, and 35 failed. These results must be regarded as distinctly good. ; In 1928 the average -percentage of proficiency candidates was. 75 for the district, so that this year's results of 78.6 showed a distinct improvement ori that year, although they were lower than those of last year. In awarding the certificates the inspectors this year, as in former years, had been guided generally by the reports of their teachers. The Chairman of the Bpard said the report could be regarded as very satisfactory. In reply to a member, the inspector said that the arithmetic paper was distinctly harder this year.
